The Boone, North Carolina, and Pompton Plains, New Jersey, communities are mourning the loss of Jonathan Lawrence Greco, who passed away on July 11, 2026, at the age of 27.
Born on October 9, 1998, in Pompton Plains, Jonathan was the beloved son of Lawrence and Janice (McCullough) Greco. He spent the past six years in Boone, where he attended Appalachian State University while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Building Sciences and worked as a site contractor for J.W. Hampton Company.
Jonathan was admired for his strong work ethic, dedication, and willingness to help others. He took great pride in contributing to several site development projects at Appalachian State University, including formwork, drainage, and sitework at Kid Brewer Stadium, the home of the Mountaineers. Helping improve a campus that had become his second home was among his proudest accomplishments.
A proud American, Jonathan served his country as a Specialist in the United States Army during Operation Inherent Resolve. He was a member of the 323rd Engineer Company in Spartanburg, South Carolina. His military service helped shape the discipline, resilience, and quiet confidence that defined his character throughout his life.
Outside of work and service, Jonathan found joy in the outdoors. He loved snowboarding, fishing, hunting, and spending time in the mountains. He also enjoyed working on his trucks, often taking on mechanical projects in his spare time.
Football was one of Jonathan’s lifelong passions. He proudly played for Pequannock Township High School, and although he also participated in lacrosse, football remained closest to his heart. A devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he treasured attending games and watching the team with his father, creating memories they would both cherish forever.
Jonathan also believed in giving back to his community. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity whenever he had the opportunity and had a deep love for animals. His Australian Shepherd, Delilah, was more than a pet—she was his loyal companion and constant friend.
He is survived by his loving parents, Lawrence and Janice Greco; his sister, Jacqueline, and her fiancé, Elias Stephenson; his son, Easton Sanders; Easton’s mother, Kayla Sanders; Annmarie and Tom Ferrante; Thomas and Lisa Greco; Patricia Greco; cousins Alicia, Nicolette, Jack, Tommy, and Matt; along with many extended family members, cherished friends, and military brothers.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Maureen Greco; his maternal grandparents, Harold and Teresa McCullough; and his uncle, John Greco.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation on Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Scanlan’s Funeral Home in Pompton Plains, with military honors to follow. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Pompton Plains, followed by interment with military honors at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to Habitat for Humanity or the Tunnels to Towers Foundation in honor of Jonathan’s commitment to helping others.
Jonathan Lawrence Greco will be remembered for his leadership, unwavering work ethic, generous heart, infectious smile, and the love he freely shared with his family, friends, fellow soldiers, and everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched.
