The nation is mourning the loss of Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, a 19-year-old U.S. Army soldier from Carrollton, Texas, who was killed during an Iranian attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan on July 17, 2026.
On Wednesday, Gonzales’ remains were returned to the United States during a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Soldiers carried her flag-draped transfer case with military honors as President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Gen. Dan Caine, and other government officials stood in salute.
Following the ceremony, her remains were transported to the mortuary facility at Dover Air Force Base, where preparations will be made for her final resting place. President Trump was also scheduled to meet privately with the families of the fallen service members.
Gonzales served as a 14P Air and Missile Defense Crewmember with the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, part of the 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade and the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command stationed in Ansbach, Germany. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 2025 and joined her unit in January 2026. She will be posthumously promoted to the rank of Private First Class.
Brig. Gen. Glenn Henke, commanding general of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, honored Gonzales’ service, describing her as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for her country. He also emphasized that supporting her family, friends, and fellow soldiers remains the command’s highest priority.
A 2025 graduate of Hebron High School, Gonzales was remembered by friends as a bright, courageous young woman whose infectious laughter and vibrant personality brought joy to everyone around her.
“She was always like a pop of color,” one friend recalled. “She was just really bright. It was never a dull moment with her.”
Her death has deeply affected the Carrollton community. During a recent City Council meeting, city leaders honored Gonzales with a moment of remembrance, while several officials wore ribbons in her favorite colors, purple and black. The meeting concluded with the playing of “Taps” in tribute to her service and sacrifice.
Carrollton officials are working closely with the Gonzales family to arrange funeral services and a community vigil. Meanwhile, members of the local American Legion have raised funds to assist the family and are coordinating additional support as they prepare to lay their loved one to rest.
Pvt. Isabella Gonzales was one of several American service members who lost their lives in recent attacks in the Middle East. Her sacrifice has been recognized across Texas and the nation, with leaders honoring her courage, dedication, and commitment to serving her country.
