The rugby league community is mourning the loss of former Newcastle Knights halfback and Catalans Dragons star Scott Dureau, who passed away on Saturday after a courageous 13-year battle with cancer. He was 39.
Dureau, remembered as both an exceptional player and an even better person, leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his achievements on the rugby league field. Throughout his long fight with aggressive cancer, he remained a source of inspiration, choosing to focus on helping others and maintaining a positive outlook despite the immense challenges he faced.
In a heartfelt statement, Once a Knight Old Boys, the organization representing former Newcastle Knights players, paid tribute to Dureau’s remarkable life.
“There are players whose careers are remembered because of what they achieved on the field. There are others who are remembered because of the people they were. Scott Dureau will be remembered for both.”
The organization highlighted that even while battling for his own future, Dureau dedicated himself to mentoring and developing young players, continuing to make a meaningful impact on the game after his retirement.
Following his playing career, which ended in 2015 after doctors removed a tumor from behind one of his eyes, Dureau returned to Newcastle, where he took on coaching and player development roles, helping guide the next generation of rugby league talent.
Former teammates and those who knew him best said his resilience, humility, and kindness defined him far more than his on-field accomplishments.
Catalans Dragons, where Dureau became one of the Super League’s premier playmakers, also released a touching tribute.
“A former iconic player of the club, he had been courageously battling the illness for several years. Beyond the exceptional player that he was, Scott was a man cherished by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His talent and numerous achievements on the field, but above all his humility and kindness, will forever be etched in our memories.”
The French club extended its deepest condolences to his wife, Libby, daughters Imogen and Everly, as well as his extended family and loved ones.
Born with a passion for rugby league, Dureau played 42 NRL matches across four seasons with the Newcastle Knights before joining Catalans Dragons, where he made 97 appearances and cemented his place among the competition’s elite. His outstanding performances earned him selection in the Super League Dream Team in both 2011 and 2012, while he also claimed the Albert Goldthorpe Medal in 2012, the Super League’s equivalent of the NRL’s Dally M Medal.
Despite facing a devastating cancer diagnosis more than a decade ago, Dureau refused to let the disease define him. He openly shared his journey, inspiring countless people with his courage, optimism, and determination to continue making a difference in the lives of others.
Scott Dureau will be remembered not only as one of rugby league’s finest playmakers but also as a devoted husband, loving father, respected mentor, and courageous fighter whose legacy of kindness, resilience, and service will endure for years to come.
He is survived by his wife, Libby, daughters Imogen and Everly, along with his extended family, friends, former teammates, and the countless lives he touched throughout his career.
