The murder case involving 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez has entered a preliminary hearing phase, where prosecutors are presenting evidence they say connects singer David Anthony Burke, known professionally as D4vd, to the teenager’s death.
The emotional court proceedings began with graphic evidence being shown in front of Celeste’s parents, who attended the hearing despite being warned about the disturbing nature of the testimony and photographs.
Prosecutors presented crime scene images showing Celeste’s remains after they were discovered inside a Tesla registered to Burke at a Hollywood, Los Angeles, tow yard in September 2025.
Burke, 21, has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder and sexual abuse involving Celeste.
During the hearing, homicide Detective Joshua Byers testified about the discovery of Celeste’s remains inside the vehicle. Investigators said her body had been placed inside bags in the trunk and had decomposed to the point that her face was no longer recognizable.
The court heard allegations that Celeste had been stabbed before her body was dismembered, with prosecutors claiming the killing was carried out in an attempt to hide evidence.
Authorities allege Burke murdered Celeste after she threatened to reveal their alleged relationship and potentially harm his rising music career. Prosecutors also claim the teenager had been subjected to years of alleged sexual abuse.
Celeste’s family attorney, Patrick Steinfeld, said the hearing was extremely painful for her parents.
“This is the first time they’ve heard this evidence in detail, and they’re horrified,” Steinfeld said following the proceedings.
He explained that Celeste’s mother, Mercedes, had been warned about the graphic images but chose to remain in court to support her daughter.
“She wanted to be here to show support for Celeste,” Steinfeld said, adding that the family was struggling to process the heartbreaking details.
During testimony, investigators discussed purchases allegedly made by Burke after Celeste’s death. Detective Byers told the court that Burke had ordered items including a body bag, chainsaws, an inflatable pool, and a shovel in the days following her death.
Prosecutors argued that the items were connected to efforts to conceal Celeste’s remains.
The hearing also focused on tattoos that investigators say may link Burke and Celeste. Prosecutors showed the court images of a tattoo reading “Celeste” on Burke’s finger, as well as matching “Shhh…” tattoos found on both Burke and Celeste.
The preliminary hearing is not a trial, but prosecutors are attempting to show that enough evidence exists for the case to move forward toward a jury trial.
The courtroom was filled with journalists, members of the public, and online content creators as Burke appeared wearing an orange jail uniform and restraints. He briefly addressed the judge before remaining seated during the proceedings.
Celeste Rivas Hernandez’s death has deeply affected her family and those following the case. Loved ones continue to seek justice while authorities and prosecutors work through the evidence surrounding the teenager’s tragic death.
The preliminary hearing is expected to continue for several days, with additional witnesses expected to testify as the court determines whether the case will proceed to trial.
