PROVO, Utah — First responders from across Utah will unite this week to honor Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina Long, and their three sons—Reid Vernon Long, Thayne Long, and Gage Long—as a solemn procession escorts the family to their final resting place.
Captain Long and his family were found deceased near a campground in Wayne County after they were caught in severe flash flooding while hiking and canyoneering. Search and recovery efforts concluded on Friday and Saturday, leaving the Provo community and emergency services across the state mourning the devastating loss.
On Tuesday afternoon, firefighters will escort the family’s bodies from the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner in Taylorsville to a funeral home in Spanish Fork. The procession will be led by Provo Fire and Rescue, with firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel, and other first responders expected to line overpasses along Interstate 15 to pay tribute to the fallen captain and his family.
“Thank you for showing your support for this incredible family,” Provo Fire and Rescue said in announcing the procession.
Captain Long was remembered by colleagues as a dedicated firefighter, respected leader, and selfless public servant whose commitment to his community defined his career.
“Spencer was one of the people in our department that just did everything,” Provo Fire Chief Jeremy Headman said, reflecting on the tremendous loss felt throughout the department.
The deaths of Spencer, Katrina, Reid, Thayne, and Gage have prompted an outpouring of condolences from across Utah, with community members, fellow firefighters, and public officials honoring the family’s memory and offering support to those grieving.
Funeral services for the Long family are expected to be held next week, with additional details anticipated to be announced by the family and Provo Fire and Rescue.
